The Circle of Many Faces
The terrifying Circle of Many Faces--a band of pirates known for their trademark masks and their cruelty--have been violently attacking ships and ports for decades, searching for pairs of twins born bearing a millennium-old curse so that they may seek their legendary treasure. When they attack St. Thomas Island in search of Reeve Doyle, one said twin, the life of a young girl called Charlotte is turned upside-down as she witnesses his attack and kidnapping. Just before he is taken, he entrusts his old compass to her, instructing it to throw her away when things have become safe. Charlotte, however, finds the compass comforting, and keeps it by her side as she grows older. One day, the compass draws the Mirror Shadow soldiers of the Circle to her island; they steal the compass and she takes it back, but not before being dragged underwater. She washes ashore on the accursed Island of Ciarta, a dark haven for reformed (so they say) criminals and underground magic, white and black alike. Ciarta holds many mysteries; that of Sam and Aislinn, the twins that remind Charlotte strongly of Reeve; that of Lia, Sam's best friend and an ex-criminal guardswoman who holds the secrets of her past closely, and many more--but unraveling these is only the beginning when it comes to the ultimate goal of the Circle of Many Faces.
The Circle of Many Faces was first written in 2004 during National Novel Writing Month, and won, coming in at just over 50,000 words. It is now being rewritten with an expanded plotline and overhauled characters.
